I just hope the old 8mm player holds out. I have another 20 or so tapes to convert. There are better and more expensive solutions but I picked this one so I could get the job done. I tried two other "rated" products but they do not match up to the quality and ease of use of the Vidbox. The original camcorder recorded in stereo sound which was maintained through the conversion process. When I play the finished video files on my computer or 4K HDTV the picture quality is excellent - for a legacy video quality recording. The freeware version of Handbrake will do the same thing but since I own Nero I'll use it. I am a Nero Platinum user and their Recode tool is what I'm using to edit the "master" video file into chapters for viewing.

The MP4 format plays well on my Apple and Window devices. The average file size for a 120 minute 8mm tape is 5 to 5.5 Gigabytes. I'm using the Hi8 player SVideo connection to pull down a better quality video feed. Connecting the Vidbox's hardware interface (the small white box) to the 8mm player and Macbook was simple.

The quality is excellent and I have not had one problem. I have converted over twenty 8mm Hi-8 video tapes. The Vidbox conversion device and software work great. Now maybe these video transfer companies do a better job.…….but I had way more tapes than money 🙂 Your call! The tapes are done, the cassettes and Laserdiscs are gone, the Sony Mini DV sold right away on the Internet, and the other players that really have no value today are waiting for the next hazardous waste pick-up in my town. I needed to preserve this stuff for my daughter. Bottom line.….at 65 I just don't need 2 VCR's, a Laserdisc player, 3 DVD player/recorders, all sitting in storage. I did not try changing my TV screen to a 4:3 from 16:9, and I bet that would improve the picture.

My Sony Handycam Mini DV had a slightly better picture for the few home movie tapes I had left over, but most of the home movies were VHS. Once was a waste of time trying to transfer regular movies. RCA red, white, and yellow from the player to the VidBox unit, USB.also om the VB to your computer and boom, there it is. Everything was done via RCA jacks which are included. Neither my Pioneer Laserdisc player, or either of my VCR's, had an S-Video output. If, however, you babied all your home video tapes like we did, you will have an acceptable transfer to DVD, or whatever transfer storage media you choose, through your computer. The only one I could not find released on DVD was an HBO movie. Maybe a videophile with additional processing software and plenty of free time can make it so, but we just bought DVD's for every VHS and Laserdisc movie we wanted to retain. Nor will you be able to transfer VHS or Laserdisc movies and end up with, in my opinion, an acceptable end product. You are not going to see a 4K picture on your TV from a 30 year old VHS camcorder tape. Like with any audio or video signal.poop in, poop out if you know what I mean. So.….a few things you need to keep in mind. But I guarantee you will have no issues no matter your skill level. I have a better than average background with computers going back to around 1980.
I mean, this was exactly what I needed and so easy to use.
